Chow Chow kootu / Vegetable pear kootu




Chow chow, known as vegetable pear is a tasty vegetable, which is normally used to make sambar or kootu. 


It cooks so fastly and it is recommended to control cholesterol levels and reducing weight. 

This chow chow kootu goes well with rasam, sambar and even with chappathi.




Ingredients :      

chow chow - 1 cup
(chopped into cubes)

toor dal or moong dal - 1 tablespoon
turmeric powder 
grated coconut - 1 small cup
cumin seeds/jeerakam-1/4 teaspoon
red chili - 2 nos
coconut oil - 2 tsp
asafoetida - a pinch
salt to taste
curry leaves




Preparation :

Pressure cook dal.








































Grind coconut, cumin seeds and red chily in to a paste. Not necessarily a fine paste.


In a vessel, cook chow chow with a little water, salt and turmeric powder. Then add  cooked dal. Now add the coconut paste and mix well.

Finally, in a tadka / tempering pan, heat coconut oil, splutter mustard seeds, add asafoetida.  Add this along with curry leaves.

Yummy chow chow kootu is ready.
