Papaya thoran - Kappalanga / Omakka thoran - Raw pappaya porial

Papaya, as we all know, is an excellent source of fiber, vitamins A, and C. It also contains vitamins E and K, potassium, and has many health benefits.

It helps in weight loss, aids in digestion, boosts our immunity, good for diabetic patients, good for our eyes and skin.

It is a natural cleanser. Papaya fruit is used as a face pack. So, papaya extracts are used in cosmetics.

In Kerala, raw papaya is used to make thoran (curry), salad, sambar, and it is included in aviyal.

Here we go with raw papaya thoran / porial.

Ingredients :

Half of a medium sized papaya -  must be raw
remove the skin and grate it using a vegetable grater

Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Mustard seeds
Urad dal - 1.5 teaspoons
Red chili - 2 or 3
Coconut grated - 1/2 cup
Coconut oil - 2 teaspoons
Asafoetida - 1 pinch
Salt - as needed
Curry leaves

Preparation :

In a kadai, put papaya, salt, turmeric powder and sprinkle water. Mix well.

Cover it with a lid and cook in a low flame. Check frequently, as we have sprinkled water.
It should not dry and get burnt.

Once it cooks, transfer it to a vessel.

In the kadai, add coconut oil, splutter mustard seeds, add urad dal, red chili, asafoetida.

Then add cooked papaya and coconut. Stir well.
Finally, add curry leaves.

(Onion is optional. If you prefer onion, you can add it before adding papaya. Once onion turns to a slight brown color, add papaya and coconut.)

My preparation is without onion. See, it looks like a cabbage thoran.
So tasty, very easy to prepare.
