Coriander leaves or Kothamalli podi for rice

Coriander or Cilantro, known as Kothamalli in Tamil,  has multiple health benefits.

Coriander leaves are a wonderful source of dietary fiber, iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and a few more. It also contains vitamins C and K. It has anti-inflammatory properties.

Some of the health benefits are,

Lowers cholesterol level in the blood
Good for digestion
Promotes liver function
Stimulates insulin secretion
Helps those suffering from Anemia.

Here we are going to see a podi made from this coriander leaves, as a rice mix.  It is not a dry powder.

Ingredients :

Coriander leaves with stem - one handful

Urad dal - 3 tsps
Asafoetida - 2 generous pinches
Red Chili - 2 or 3 nos
Tamarind - small gooseberry size
Rock Salt - as per taste
Gingelly oil - 2 tsps

Preparation :

Clean and wash Coriander leaves. Dry it for some time. See to that there is no water on the leaves. Chop them finely.

In a kadai, add oil and fry urad dal, red chili, and asafoetida. When you switch off the stove, put tamarind in it and give a stir. Just the tamarind heats up slightly to give a nice aroma. Allow it to cool.

Now in a mixie, grind the fried ingredients along with salt. Then add coriander leaves and grind coarsely. Do not add water.

Very tasty Kothamalli podi is ready to taste with hot steamed rice. You can add gingelly oil.

I have used only urad dal. You can also add 1 tsp of Bengal gram (Kadala paruppu) and reduce urad dal to 2 tsps.

Mix a little gingelly oil, and you can take this along with dosa too.

This is a healthy recipe and tastes so good.
