Aval or Poha or beaten rice is a form of flattened rice. It is easily digestible and very popular across India. These dry flakes swell when added to water or milk, as they quickly absorb the liquid added. Normally, we use Aval to make snacks and lighter food. We also make sweet recipes using aval.
Now let us see Aval / Poha upma, which you can make very swiftly with easily available ingredients at home.
Ingredients :
Coconut oil -2 tsps
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Bengal gram - 1 tsp
(kadalai paruppu)
Asafoetida - a pinch
Red chili - 2 nos
Onion - finely chopped - 2 nos
Salt to taste
Curry leaves
Preparation:
Wash aval 2 times in water and drain the water using a strainer. Let it set aside for a few minutes.
In a kadai, add coconut oil, splutter mustard seeds. Add bengal gram, once it turns brown add red chilis, asafoetida, turmeric powder, and onion.
Once onion turns light brown, add salt, and curry leaves. Then add aval and switch off the stove. Stir well.
Tasty aval upma is ready.
You can also add roasted peanuts, grated carrot, and coconut for a richer taste.
If you are using a thicker variety of aval, after draining the water, sprinkle a little amount of water and keep it aside. It takes a little more time to become soft.
